The Retreat at Crabtree Falls

A Letter From the Owners

Welcome to The Retreat at Crabtree Falls!

Hello! It is such a pleasure to host our guests here at The Retreat at Crabtree Falls and we are looking forward to hosting you! I'm Beth-Anne Norman Driskill, the general manager of The Retreat at Crabtree Falls and daughter of the owners.

When I was growing up, my grandmother, Barbara Otto, owned and operated two of these cabins as rental properties. Thus, I grew up with the luxury of getting away from the hustle, bustle, and stress of everyday life to come up to my grandmother's house up in the mountains. These mountains are a freeing, relaxing and beautiful place that touches the hearts of all who visit.

As a child, I would run around these woods looking for little natural treasures or go down to the river and jump from rock to rock. I loved to slide down the mossy rock into the water at the North Fork swimming hole. Catching salamanders from Lick Branch was an everyday competition between me and my brother. The hike up the falls was always one of the best activities, and I would always search for the perfect walking stick and hide in the "bear cave" until I could jump out and scare whoever I was with!

Nights in these mountains were filled with sitting on the front porch swing listening to my grandmother tell stories about the “friendly ghost” at Annie's or sitting out back by her fire pit cooking s'mores under starry skies. When I got older, my grandmother decided it was time to give up her cabins and move to the beach.

My father purchased the cabins in 2000 and has put his heart and soul into them; modernizing and upgrading them to top-quality rentals. We now have the three original cabins my grandmother owned, Barb’s House, Annie's Cabin and Jack's Place, as well as my grandmother's neighbors, Tony’s Place, and our newest addition, Richard's Retreat.

After several years of living on the outskirts of D.C., I was growing weary of the big city life. An opportunity for me to move to the cabins arose and I quickly jumped on it. Moving to The Retreat at Crabtree Falls in 2016 to manage the company was the perfect decision! I met my future husband, Paul, shortly after moving here and we married right down the road at Pharsalia in May of 2018.

My family now has a reason to escape to the mountains more frequently now and they visit us often. It is such a joyful sight to watch my three little nieces run through the woods catching salamanders and playing in the river. The great outdoors is so easily missed by children these days. In such a busy world, sometimes we need to get away from cell service, social media, television... the hustle and bustle. It’s important for kids to play outside in rivers, to use their imagination, to enjoy nature, to get dirty and to be a kid!

These mountains are a gift. Being here brings people back to what so many have forgotten… being in nature and being together. It’s impossible while you are here to not remember what a wonderful, beautiful world in which we are so blessed to live. And even better than that, are the people with whom you experience it.

Each of these cabins holds hundreds of heart-warming memories for me, my family and friends. I am so lucky to have been able to have experienced these mountains, but this place is too wonderful to keep a secret! My family and I would love to share this mountain and these cabins with you so that you and yours can form wonderful memories of your own. Come on in and take a look at The Retreat at Crabtree Falls!
